ccTLD Country Code Top Level Domain News and Info
A group of New Zealand businessmen have filed an application at ICANN to appy for DOT Kiwi.
The whole DOT kiwi thing has been in the works for sometime now and i actually thought the whole thing was a done deal and prolly gets approved and then we have a new TLD .kiwi.
So i was rather suprised when i read the following news on InternetNZ, the ccTLD operator for .NZ (New Zealand).
The applicant Donald Clark states the following :

ICANN's Akram Atallah posted the breakdown on how and what and how many. The TAS glitch made it able that applicants were able under certain conditions to see eachothers user names and file names.
There are 1275 registered TAS users.
Emails were send to the all the TAS users and does not tell much at all.
Well that tells us that none of the TAS users tried to glitch and game the system and did behave themselfs as good choirboys.
ICANN translation, if you do tell, we gonna tell your mom and you gonna get spanked.
May 22th TAS re opens and closes at may 30th.
Incase you want to file a last minute gTLD application and are not a registered TAS user, then contact me.

I said it before and i will say it again. Those guys in Russia are going fast and internet just keeps on growing there. Who is Denic again ? Denic is the second largest TLD operator in the world and takes care of DOT DE (German ccTLD). Denic passed the 15th million registration mark a few weeks ago.
Anyways here is the PR.
DENIC, the managing organization of Germany’s top-level domain .DE, and the Technical Center of Internet, the backbone services provider for .RU, .SU and .РФ, have successfully expanded their DNS networks, with two new DNS nodes opened in Moscow, Russia, and Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany.
As a result of the joint project, a new DNS node in .RU, .SU and .РФ DNS network went live, with a total of 15 DNS nodes in the Russian backbone system as of now. Located at the German registry’s technical site, the new node is connected to the Internet via DENIC’s backbone. Further, the new DNS node is connected to the DE-CIX traffic exchange point. At the moment, 24% of requests served by the new node, come from Russia, followed by German (18%), Ukrainian (10%), Israeli, Romanian and Byelorussian users. The new node is available both via IPv4 and IPv6 protocols.
In addition to the new German DNS node serving Russian top-level domains, another DNS node for Germany’s .DE went live in Russia. The new node is located at TCI’s technical site in Moscow, and is connected to the MSK-IX traffic exchange point. The Technical Center of Internet ensures connectivity of the German node. The new node also supports both IPv4 and IPv6 protocols. It currently handles up to 3.5 Mbps of traffic, corresponding to 40 to 50K queries per minute. Thanks to TCI and DENIC’s joint project, requests to .DE and Russian ccTLDs can be processed even faster now. This project enables DENIC and TCI to expand their DNS networks, and will ensure continuous reliability and stability of the global network.

This was also covered a few days earlier on Internetnews.me so i decided not to post about it. But someone asked me why DNS.BE (Belgium ccTLD operator) would actually offer those certificates.
The answer is pretty simple. The public WHOIS is rather restricted for DNS BE and will only show the email address of the registrant, this compared to the WHOIS for say like .com is like black and white ie DNS BE offers WHOIS protection for free. Keep in mind when you register a .BE as a company the full information willbe displayed in the WHOIS.
Since the WHOIS is only showing an email address it is hard to proof that you own a .BE domain name. Now with the domain owners certificates that issue is solved.
If a prospect wants to have proof you actually own the domain name you can send him a PDF that proofs it.
Requesting an SSL certificate for your domain name ? Tada ! Domain owners certificate to the rescue.
The procedure to obtain the certificate is pretty simple (see link below).
Below the PR release from DNS BE.

Other non PIR related news but related to the .CO registry in domainers land is the following story:
Juan Calle of the .CO Registry DISSES Domainers!!
Not the smartest move in the history. I was kinda amazed how fast that news spread and kept people busy for a while.
My point of view on .CO, as soon the people in Colombia start using .CO then it becomes a ccTLD that opens up oppertunities. As for now, i think only domainers invested in it and it has barely any legit use.
Though i gotta hand it to the .CO registry, brilliant marketing campagain !
