In 2008 the Dutch province Friesland decided that it was time for their own TLD called .FRL. Back then the costs where estimated around 60.000 Euros. A few years later a new calculation showed it wouldbe prolly around 2 million Euro's and a few debates later in 2012 it's official. No .FRL for the province Friesland. There was no majority for the .FRL TLD among the local politicians, the province decided that the price of 2 million was rather high and that companies in Friesland wouldbe forced to register .FRL domain names, thus had to make extra costs. All things combined lead to the cancellation of .FRL. I guess we will never find out if Friesland would have managed to launch .FRL, the 3 letter TLD looks alot like .FR (ccTLD for France).
